I watched October Faction so you don’t have to…

Uncategorized

So, I have kind of been on a roll with Netflix Original titles lately so I thought I’d continue with October Faction. This 2020 title follows a family of supernatural hunters who travel around with an organisation called ‘Presidio’.

While I started watching it expecting to see a Supernatural rip-off it was really more similar to Shadow Hunters with the righteous (humans) who attempt to kill all the ‘monsters’ whilst also doing horrible things to them and massacring people. Kind of reminds me of the Clave in Shadow Hunters. As well as just how much politics is going on between these groups. So, if you liked Shadow Hunters maybe you’ll enjoy October Faction.

The moral of the story is; if you want to watch some hunters + family dysfunction (and magic babies). Just watch Supernatural instead. You still get the angst and hunting (in fact more hunting), still got those family dynamics (in particular daddy issues), however, without the high school experience. So, while they are different, if you have the ability to watch Supernatural instead, for instance on Aussie Stan, do that. If not then sure you can check out October Faction.

Anyway, here are all the things that didn’t make sense to me in October Faction;

Oslo? Someone explain to my why they would be being transferred to Oslo, that is actually quite far from the Finland-Russia boarder. It isn’t that close? Why Oslo? Why not Helsinki or even Stockholm? Not many people know this but I’m obsessed with Norway so I know a bit about it, and I know it looks small but in actual land size it is pretty big so, that is really far, even by plane its several hours away…

Yes, Oslo… right by the border?

**Oslo is in the south of Norway by the Sweden border**

The whole burial thing made no sense because he couldn’t possibly not give this one guy a proper burial but he walked over all his other soldiers who also just died. And you can’t say its because of the mission because the mission wasn’t over either time.

It wasn’t snowing then it was only moments later…

Murder vs torture. Can we really act like they’re so different and one is off limits when their jobs are to murder.

How could no one know about the secret prison and why was it a secret? They raised all these soldiers to believe everything else was a monster and the enemy, wouldn’t lots of them not care about the torture cave?

Why were they the only two without masks or helmets on?

So who’s kid was she putting in danger

Seems like it was kind of all Alice’s fault to me.

How’d she cut her own umbilical chords and tie them off on her own?

How did no one find Alice screaming whilst giving birth to twins while there were soldiers everywhere killing her town?

What was the actual purpose of fake killing the grandfather – it wasn’t to bring their family back because they tried to transfer them right after. Seems like everyone hated the old man so who would have known?

Just because they’re ‘free’ why’d they become assholes.

None of the big reveals shocked me, not the “they’re my children” or the “old man isn’t dead” or the guy with the weird eye being the dead brother. I’m sorry, I don’t know if that was just me but they all felt pretty obvious to me…

What did shock me was Alice over-writing all the innocent humans to bring back the warlocks. And like, Viv and Geoff didn’t care?

Lowkey the story of Alice being imprisoned underwater by whoever would’ve made a better story. Show me that flashback. I believe the show would have been better if we watched the events at Harlow then watched what Alice did after as opposed to basically the whole show. Sorry.

So anyway, if you liked Shadow Hunters you probably won’t mind October Faction but I won’t say it isn’t flawed… clearly. It is available on Netflix, the first 10 episodes, so check it out if you’re interested and if you did watch it, please comment down below and let me know what you thought!

Every reason I could find for why Derek Shepherd is the worst…

Uncategorized

I’m sure everyone has seen the recent hype around Patrick Dempsey’s return to Greys Anatomy this past week. So, I thought now was the perfect time to remind everyone of who Derek really was…

https://t.cfjump.com/73456/t/32550?Url=https%3a%2f%2fwww.sanity.com.au%2fsearch%3fsanquery%3dgrey%2527s%2banatomy%26sanse%3dunbxd

Grey’s Anatomy is obviously an incredibly successful medical show, one of several 2005 hit tv shows. It has recently been announced that Grey’s will run at least until 17 seasons. However, some would put a lot of the shows success on Patrick Dempsey and the ‘McDreamy’ facade. However, I just can’t agree. I can’t understand why it is constantly said that Derek is a good guy. It’s like they think if we hear that he’s a good guy enough then we will believe it despite all the evidence against it. I hate Derek Shepherd. I always have and probably always will. I don’t get the McDreamy hype or the Derek and Meredith hype but I will concede that the show isn’t as good after Derek dies. But I don’t put that down to Derek I think the vibe just shifts, and Meredith gets worse in my opinion after he dies. However, it truly amazes me how many terrible things he does during his run on the show. So, here’s every reason I could find for why Derek Shepherd is the worst….

  1. Doesn’t tell Meredith he’s married…

2. If we didn’t know Meredith liked Derek back, him pestering her is sexual harassment. Also he is her superior and could be using his power over her and her career. Just because they met first and had a one night stand doesn’t mean she doesn’t feel pressured and harassed.

3. Drags Meredith along for the ride then chooses Addison. Also, makes Meredith ‘a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her’ which I just hate.

4. Neglects Addison. Derek admits to neglecting Addison before she cheated and when he chose to stay with her and they started therapy.

5. Also slut shames Meredith which is a real class act in my opinion.

6. Cheats on Addison with Meredith at the Prom, whilst also basically shitting on Meredith right before it blaming her for him not wanting Addison.

7. Gets shitty at Meredith for almost dying, as if her being in an accident and dying is about Derek. It’s too much for him. He has no idea what actually happened, how long she was in the water, for all he knows she could have hit her head on the way down or the hypothermia got too much or you know, its not easy to tread water for hours. For all Derek knows she did try and she just couldn’t hold on. “She gave up, she knows how to swim” YOU DON’T KNOW THAT DEREK. YOU’RE MAKING IT UP.

8. Tells Meredith she’s emotionally broken!

9. Almost cheats on Meredith with Lexi then acts like hes a good guy cause he didn’t when he tells Meredith in order to hurt her.

10. I’ll wait for you unless I meet someone else… excuse me what!

11. Doesn’t want to give Meredith any credit for the clinical trial. Yes, Derek is the senior on the project but it was Meredith’s idea which she brought to him and did all the initial research on and did minimum half of the work with the patients (probably more). She also is the only reason they had a success because she pushed for the extra 1 patient. Meredith could have brought her idea and research to someone else but Derek is the God and Derek will always be bigger and better and like Christina said “he’s not the sun” even though he acts like it every chance he gets.

12. Cheats on Rose with Meredith. So now we’re 2 for cheating and 1 for not (Lexi, but I’d suggest more like 0.5 since he considered it)…

13. Does try to steal Chief from Webber… more than once….

14. The throwing the ring in Meredith’s face.

15. Tells Meredith she’d be a terrible mother! As if he would know.

16. ‘Why is the chief spending time with you and not talking to me, he’s trying to get to me’. No Derek, maybe Meredith is just good, maybe the Chief sees more in her than just an intern. Granted that whole alcoholism thing was going on but that doesn’t make it the reason. Because, Meredith is a good surgeon.

17. The whole thing with Zola when Derek practically left her because she was trying to save Adele’s life and they almost lost Zola. Derek knows that Richard is like a father to Meredith and Adele has always been kind to Meredith despite her mother having an affair with Richard. So, obviously she would want to give Adele any chance to live. If it was someone else she wouldn’t have done it but for Derek having known Richard and Adele for years, he should understand what Meredith did.

18. Derek is rude to everyone, all the time. I’ll say it again, you can’t just say he’s a good guy and trick people into thinking it’s true. Everyone is always saying Derek is a good guy – show me where, when, give me an example, please.

19. Derek is mean to his sisters, specifically Amelia. Yes, Amelia is an addict who has made mistakes but she is also a neurosurgeon and she is trying her best to manage her addiction, Derek doesn’t need to constantly belittle her.

20. Derek giving Owen shit about the plane crash constantly. As if Owen could have predicted a plane crash? Yes, he signed a document changing airlines however, Derek had that job, he knows how much paperwork there is and the assistant just hands you pages to sign. That’s the job, the hospital is broke and has been for years.

21. Named his kid after himself, now I didn’t know this until I looked it up but Bailey’s real first name is Derek. Derek Bailey Shepherd, tell me why?

22. Derek’s career will always be more important than Meredith’s.

23. Everything to do with the brain mapping project:
– going back on his word to give Meredith time for her career

-moving away to do the project

-trying to steal the sensors Derek worked on with Callie and destroying her research

-Went away, claimed he was changing his mind for his family then was only being spiteful towards Meredith before she finally made him leave. After she told him that was what was going to happen.

24. Derek tries to steal the job he got Amelia because on a whim he decided to leave the project. In doing so, allows her to be outed as an addict and doesn’t defend her. How is this a ‘good guy’? Please someone explain it to me!

25. DID CHEAT ON MEREDITH WITH THE RESEARCH ASSISTANT! Did we all just forget that because he came back? So, that’s 3 for cheating to 0.5 for not!!

Now, I don’t know about you but I think that is quite a list. Obviously I couldn’t sift through 12 years of episodes just to find individual lines when he was being terrible, but I still think that is quite an impressive list don’t you? From this list I think it is clear that Derek is a cheater, manipulative, arrogant, rude and down right spiteful for all 12 seasons he is on Greys. So, while I agree the show wasn’t as good, or at least wasn’t the same without him, I prefer the parts in those seasons which he wasn’t in. Also, the few seasons leading up to Derek’s death when he was being the absolute worst I feel like weren’t as good as the old days either. But, hey, that’s just my personal opinion. I’d love to hear yours! Do you still stan Derek and Meredith? Do you think he is McDreamy? I’d love to know.

I personally would say I’m a McSteamy stan myself, Mark is great and I will happily write a post about that if anyone is interested just comment down below.

‘House at the End of the Street’ is actually really good…

Movies, Uncategorized

Let me explain,

SO, I’ve seen ‘House at the End of the Street’ honestly, probably, 5 times at this point and those who read my Curse of Chucky review post will know, I’m more into the supernatural type horror. This is probably at least, in part, because it is further from reality. However, I think this is a really good movie for several reasons.

I think it is scary because of how real it is. He was a mentally ill man who was emotionally tortured his entire life after the death of his sister. He was told he killed his sister and his parents did not want him, they wanted his sister. For parents to force their kid to take on their dead sisters identity because she died is abuse. And no one knew, no one helped him.

This was furthered by him being an outcast because of his family meaning he couldn’t make the positive ties he had needed. The town treated him badly because of something that happened to him (well at least so they thought).

I also think it is good because you can see him somewhat deteriorate when he loses “his sister” over and over. He loses so much control when he loses her. And it’s also super interesting to me how much they humanised him. Lots of movies where people are mass murderers or kidnappers show them as a monster but this movie really said ‘hey, it’s not that simple’.

He grapples with wanting to protect Jennifer Lawrence and wanting to fit in, whilst also trying to manage his psyche and mental illness. It is clear that he did not want to hurt Jennifer Lawrence however, in that moment, when he realized he couldn’t have both unless she was Carrie Anne, for him things changed.

Now, I’m no psychologist/psychiatrist, and I’m not condoning his actions in any way. But it is so powerful to show a normal person ruined by society over time. He was a child and there was an accident, his parents abused him for years before he could no longer take it and yes, murdered them. Then he spent the rest of his life trying to atone for “killing his sister” by “protecting her and keeping her safe”. Obviously, that isn’t what was happening but for him, it is, he was protecting his sister. The town shunned the boy they believed lost his parents and sister in a terrible way.

So, I really think this movie goes to show how society can ruin people and mental illness can have terrible impacts. He was a regular guy, any one of us could have become him if we had similar circumstances and I think the depth of his character is what really makes this a good movie. Even after all he had lived through and the persisting mental illness, he is kind to Jennifer Lawrence at all times until he needs her to become Carrie Anne.

I won’t say it’s particularly scary or anything but it is fascinating to me to finish a movie about a man kidnapping women and killing them, but feel somewhat sorry for the killer at the end when they show his story. A man who had nothing to hold on to but his sister and he needed her to ground himself.

I’d love to know your thoughts on this movie and if you’ve seen it in the comments at the bottom of the page. It is currently available on Aussie Stan and I highly recommend giving it a shot.

My thoughts on ‘Supernatural’…

Uncategorized

SO, I’m sure most people have heard of Supernatural and even potentially how after a 15 season run, Supernatural is coming to an end in a few weeks. I started watching Supernatural many years ago and I still really love it. I think supernatural is a great show which mixes crime and well, the supernatural. I think it is done incredibly well which is why it’s been able to garner 15 seasons. I am truly sad to see it end but excited to see more from Jared, Jensen and Misha.

So, I personally prefer the early seasons of Supernatural because they weren’t quite so story oriented. There was a lot more of what my dad calls ‘monster of the week’, introducing new supernatural beings and travelling around. Over the years Supernatural got a lot more plot driven with season long story-lines getting more and more outlandish and I feel like this is because they started too hard. Supernatural introduced God and Angels and the Apocalypse in season 4 and 5 respectively. There are 15 seasons. I recognise they were shocked by the response and longevity the show has gotten but they kind of shot themselves in the foot introducing all these concepts so early. Because it meant that Lucifer and hell and purgatory all happened quite early. Then it became – well how can we scale up the story-line because you can’t just go back to something basic.

So then we end up with, ‘The Darkness’ supernatural got stuck in a God and Bible related story-line and had to keep pulling from that. We had the ‘Mark of Kane’ and ‘The Darkness’ which was literally them pulling a second all powerful being from nothing. Then we move on to all powerful nephilim and parallel worlds. Which, fine, but, for me this is why I prefer the early seasons. I liked seeing these two brothers road trip around fighting vampires or demons. They really lost a lot of this when they went down the bible path. And we saw when they tried to steer themselves away from such a powerful story-line to the British Men of Letters stuff it just wasn’t as good. At least to me. I just couldn’t care that much about British Men of Letters after they beat the original apocalypse in like season 5.

I also just constantly wonder what the deal was with Sam’s superpowers. He had them and then they just stopped being a problem? Why? Unless I’m forgetting something I just wonder where they went. Like he had them before he had his demon blood kick, was it something to do with him dying or losing his soul? Please let me know if you remember.

There is also the constant killing and resurrecting characters. Like, I honestly stopped feeling sad seeing them die because I knew the show was renewed or that it wasn’t the end of the season. So I watched Sam die in the other world and I was just like, eh, he’ll be back because that is season 13. They really did kill them way too many times for me it was just outrageous. So outrageous in fact that all the Reapers and Death himself were after them because they were so pissed off about all the resurrections.

So, while I still love Supernatural and watch it constantly and will til the end, I feel like they shot themselves in the foot plot-wise going too hard too soon and locking themselves into Bible stories.

However, I do think it is great that they were able to get 15 seasons, it kind of shows the prevalence that these more typically ‘sci-fi’ ‘nerdy’ shows have grown. It was a little show about two brothers fighting monsters because that’s all they knew and they got 15 years, 15 seasons out of it and millions of worldwide fans. For me, Supernatural made it possible for so many other shows to garner views and mainstream popularity like ‘The Order’, ‘October Faction’, ‘Falling Skies’ and even shows like ‘The Vampire Diaries’ or ‘Teen Wolf’ were likely influenced in some way by Supernatural’s success.

They also just had so much fun with Supernatural, they didn’t shy away from taking risks and throwing things out there. For example, an animated Scooby-Doo episode is pure genius. There were many black and white episodes, some time travel just for fun and we also got to watch a random wild west episode. They just went for it which I think is amazing. Let’s not forget them creating the Supernatural fandom in the show through the ‘book series’ and having them go to fan conventions. I will always love the episode where they come to our alternative universe where Supernatural is just a show with Jensen and Jarred, gold.

So, I am absolutely gutted to know Supernatural is about to end it’s 15th season, I am so appreciative to it for so much watch time and success. I am a sci-fi fan myself, and I feel like Supernatural has given me the ability to enjoy so many more sci-fi shows down to it’s success and The CW clearly saw this success and produced more shows with supernatural undertones. ‘The vampire Diaries’ had 8 seasons, Falling Skies with 5, Teen Wolf with 6 or 7. Although, I must still pay homage to Stargate (SG1 and Atlantis) and Startrek  for also being an incredibly long-running and successful sci-fi franchises prior to Supernatural. But, I feel like Supernatural did something in TV for my generation.

Also, I recognise there are many opportunities for The CW to create spin-off shows with all the characters through the years. For instance, we could watch bobby making his way before he had met John or we could follow on afterward with Donna, Jody, Claire and Alex as the next generation of hunters. We could even go back and watch the mother daughter duo from Season 2, Ellen and Jo and see their story before they met Sam and Dean. There are so many unique characters who have been met over the years and any of these could warrant their own shows where the fans could watch hunters in the past learning all the tricks John left in his journal or the future and see where it goes. Even watching Garth hunting would be fun. I am hopeful a form of spin-off will come from Supernatural, especially if it could allow any of the original cast to return even as guest stars once in a while. There is so much we could still explore in the Supernatural world that it’d be a shame if this truely is the end.

Thanks so much for reading, I’d love to hear your thoughts on Supernatural and it’s success over the last 15 years. Please comment down below any thoughts you have. Come back next week for a new post.
