My biggest television pet peeves…

I think it’s probably pretty clear by now that I watch a lot of TV. Hence my having my own dedicated blog. But, there are a multitude of consistent things used in TV shows which really annoy me. So, here is my list of my biggest pet peeves with examples from just a few shows. Hope you enjoy!

You can tell that they almost never fill coffee cups or mugs…

Just fill the coffee cup with water so it’s weighted correctly. That’s it. It is so obvious when the cup is empty cause they practically throw them around because it’s so light. It makes me so angry. Is that just me? It’s like they put the lid on a takeaway cup and think I can’t tell it’s empty.

Women wearing heels all the time!

For instance, women wearing stilettos to high school everyday. That is incredibly unrealistic. Even in superhero shows and crime shows the women have heels on. HEALS ARE NOT EASY TO RUN IN SO I DON’T BELIEVE YOU. Don’t bring young women up in a world which tells us we need to be wearing high heels everywhere to be successful and beautiful, or even just that we should be. I’m talking to you Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl.

I don’t know about you but; if I was in a role which I may need to chase someone (i.e. super hero, police officer, doctor) I don’t think my choice of shoe would be heeled. Maybe that’s just me…

Continuity problems:

For example, How I Met Your Mother didn’t decide that Robin was Canadian until the second season – then they decided she was a Canadian teen pop sensation but she still has issues with her dad having wanted a son in the later seasons and was apparently a tomboy.

Arrow: Now, I never caught up on Arrow so I haven’t finished it to see how they explain this but, Oliver Queen gets trapped on a deserted island, only he doesn’t because it isn’t deserted. But also, there is no one there 5 years later when he is rescued. But also, he goes back to Sterling City for a hot second, and he spends a lot of time in China trying to deal with a bio-weapon. And I’m sure a lot of other stuff. Before he somehow has to go back to the island, sit around there alone growing a beard and setting up his little signal fire, then finally get rescued to go back home. I recognise they probably explain this somehow but it really infuriated me to watch him do all these things not even on the island during the 5 years he was presumed dead. INCLUDING going back to Sterling City and seeing Thea!

Casting way out of the real age range:

We constantly see in Hollywood they cast way above the age they are portraying especially for teens and young adults. This really just skews children and teen’s ideas of how they are supposed to look at a certain age when most of the time those playing 15/16 year old kids are in their mid 20’s. Why can’t we just cast close to the age of the character?

I understand there can be a need to recast actors in the industry because actors choose not to come back or what not but it can be really jarring as a viewer. For example, after several seasons watching Jake T. Austin in ‘The Fosters’ (on Stan), they recast him with Noah Centineo. Jake played that character for years then they just put Noah in and hoped no one would care that much. Especially when it is hard to really play the character the exact same way a different actor did. This same thing happens in Pretty Little Liars where they recast Jason after he made several appearances. It may sometimes be unavoidable but it is still really jarring as a viewer.

We so often see people in shows having super private conversations which cannot be heard by others, happen in rooms full of people!

For instance, the Liars chat about ‘A’ constantly at school and parties and what not, do they really think they are being secretive. Aria constantly talks about Ezra at school when he is a teacher there. The Keating 5 just talk about murder all the time in front of so many people. Yes, none of these people are being spoken to but, people can hear your conversation even if they aren’t trying to listen. I just feel like you wouldn’t realistically talk about having murdered people in public.

Trying to be super sneaky and hidden whilst also shinning a torch everywhere telling everyone where you are…

This happens so often in horror and crime related shows. It really grinds my gears when people are trying to hide from something or corner them and they shine a flashlight down the entire hallway. I understand needing to see but it is really not hidden. If I was hiding from the Police in a dark house with the lights off, the Police shining their torch all around would signal me to where they are in order to continue hiding.

“Slow Burn”:

When a show doesn’t have and interesting beginning or they have to do heaps of exposition. For instance, I tried watching ‘The Witcher’ and only made it 1 episode in because, well, it was boring. Not much really happened in the first episode whilst at the same time they were trying to throw so much information at the audience to set the scene. I personally (and I know many won’t agree) would have preferred if they had done some sort of intro scene or narration to set up the world we are in, like in Avatar the Last Airbender or Vampire Academy, The 100, etc. Sometimes narrative exposition is annoying but if the show is going to throw lots of lore and information about supernatural beings and whatnot, I find it kind of annoying not to. I felt the same in The Haunting of Bly Manor and several other shows. Moral being, your pilot needs to be interesting and exciting but also easy to follow. I don’t want to struggle to understand and interpret what is going on because I won’t finish the show.

Changing your title song part way through the show:

I have seen many shows which have done this and just randomly switched songs or moved to a different version of the same song and I just cant stand it. By the time they change the song I’m already so used to the sound of it that every time after that, when I hear the different version of the song, it puts me off. So, thanks Veronica Mars specifically for this one.

Title sequences that don’t fit:

I feel like some shows make a title sequence before they really realize what the vibe of the show is going to be and the title scene just doesn’t fit. For instance, Pretty Little Liars, I love Pretty Little Liars but I will never understand why they made the title sequence as it was, the colouring wasn’t the same, the song didn’t feel like the right tone for the show, all of it feels off to me.

credit to owner of video

Similarly, Grey’s Anatomy; I also love Grey’s however, when you go back to the early seasons it is really off putting seeing the Grey’s title sequence as it, for me at least, doesn’t fit the show. The title sequence they put in makes Grey’s look like it is far more sexual than it is, yes there are a lot of relationships and drama in Grey’s but there is also a hell of a lot of medicine and the title scene, if I hadn’t seen the show first, would have made me not want to watch the show because of the message and vibe it gives off.

She’s the only girl who doesn’t throw herself at me, so I like her…

What a tired storyline which is really quite disgusting when you think about it. Let’s consider just recently, the entire premise of the Kissing Booth was he liked her because everyone else wanted him, gross! This also kind of perpetuates that most girls will just throw themselves at an attractive man which is just disrespectful. Complex characters please!

One best friend has always loved the other – then they date…

I really hate this one too. Just think of a better plot because if one friend has always loved the other, and the other never saw them that way then why do they deserve to suddenly realize how great their friend is, why didn’t they notice before.

And obviously we can’t forget;

Main Character syndrome…

But, I’ll spare y’all from hearing this one again, if you want to know more about this one check out my post here:

Now, I’m sure that isn’t all the pet peeves I have but it’s all I could think of for this post. Please comment yours down below and whether any of mine made it on to your list! I’d love if you checked out some or my other posts of my socials down below:

Every qualm I have with ‘Pretty Little Liars’ season1b…

pretty little liars, Uncategorized

In case you missed Pretty Little Liars season 1a check it out in my blog posts page. This post follows directly on from it. As said in the previous post there will be whole series spoilers if you haven’t finished PLL yet so be warned.

Now, Here’s the part Two:

1. Why wouldn’t Emily tell her mum her and Ben broke up?

2. Putting a spare key under your doormat is stupid, especially when you’re the only door on your floor with a doormat Ezra.

3. Aria’s a bit of a crazy ex-girlfriend breaking into Ezra’s apartment like that.

4. Apparently Jason went to an ivy league?

5. If Jenna thinks Garret killed Alison why’d she come back and try and point the finger at people. Or a different way, why’d she stay away til Alison was ‘found’ if she “knew what happened”?

6. Why’s Sean so threatened by Lucas, also, Sean is boring.

7. If the police gave the DiLaurentis’s back Alison’s bracelet because she was wearing it when she died – how’d it stay down there, did it fall off in the hole and Alison left and Bethany went in on top of it or what? Doesn’t make sense that Bethany would have an Alison bracelet.

8. Wilden forcing Emily to out herself for no good reason is fucked.

9. He didn’t have a warrant so finding the letter or the statues is inadmissible surely.

10. Why did Ian break up with Melissa if she knew he was cheating?

11. Where did Mona get the Ian Alison video?

12. Why weren’t they just nicer to everyone, if the liars had just been nicer to Mona she might have stopped.

13. Why didn’t Ashley Marin just move house, why didn’t she sell that enormous house instead of stealing from an old woman

14. None of Aria’s friends stopped her and Ezra – the only person who is genuinely worried is Noel, and then they paint him as a bad guy.

15. Ashley steals the money then wastes a bunch of it on a private hospital room, why? This must be why she has money problems…

16. Alison comes back because she somehow knew Hanna was hit by a car, but not a soul saw her? She got into town, into the hospital and just walked around – flyers with her face on were still up and no one saw her? What about security cameras?

17. Why’d Spencer just give up on Alex when he was mad, she could’ve told him the truth. I liked Alex.

18. Hanna’s all pissed about being paid to dance with Lucas but like, I’d love to be paid $1000 to dance with someone one time, especially since Sean is so boring.

19. Paige tried to drown Emily and she didn’t report it.

20. Aren’t there security cameras in the school? Which could catch footage of Caleb stealing from vending machines and like, living there?

21. The bank has bad security against fraud.

22. Mrs Marin didn’t think Mrs potter would notice she had lost her key for an entire year?

23. Where’d Byron get Ezra’s home phone number?

24. If Paige had been into Emily since before Ali left (as we find out when Cece tells the story about Pig Skin and tricking Paige), then why would she try and drown her and be so homophobic to her, if she knew she had been into Emily for 2 yrs?

25. They constantly talk about Aria and Ezra in the school in public, what about people who eavesdrop?

26. They elude to Ashley Marin’s family problems in her childhood but they never explain it and I wish they just told us. Same goes for Byron’s brother’s issues that they elude to.

27. How did fake ID’s get 5 15yrolds into a college party where there were people checking IDs

28. So if Ezra was dating Jacquie on and off for 2 years, when was he dating Alison during that? and why was he obsessed with Ali’s disappearance?

29. SO they can’t take a private photo together but they can have each other’s names on their phones and text while they’re at school?

30. I don’t know how old Garret is but he’s also got a thing for younger girls

31. Why did Ian go after Spencer? If he wasn’t A and he loved Melissa why would he try and kill her sister?

32. Who was paying for Alison’s storage locker for so long and why didn’t they wonder that? Also, why didn’t Alison come back for her key and leverage?

And here are my constant qualms throughout the series for anyone who missed them in the first post:

  • If they had just owned up to their actions and taken responsibility for themselves they could have stopped Mona and therefore Charlotte. But they were too worried about taking responsibility for themselves that they let themselves be terrorized.
  • Ezra is such a creeper.
  • Sexualising a teacher is disgusting and the fact no one tells throughout the show is incredible.
  • Wren is also a creeper.
  • Melissa makes no sense in most of her actions as she thinks Spencer murdered Alison.
  • Which is the front door of Spencer’s house, we constantly see people coming through both the door in the living room and the one on the side of the kitchen and I can’t tell.
  • Alison is terrible.
  • Mona spends a lot of time just hoping she’ll get lucky and her A messages will be heard, for example…
  • Spencer doesn’t move into the barn until the flash forward but they made a big deal about her re-doing the barn to move in, in the pilot.
  • If Mona hated Alison so much for what she did to everyone why did Mona turn herself into Alison to insult people the exact same way and bully them, even using Alison’s insults?
  • How did Mona have the time to stalk all four of them all the time including at school?
  • Heels everyday at high school?
  • Why did no one who saw Alison the night she died come forward, none of them?
  • They are so bad at protecting their belongings, they leave their bags places, don’t lock their cars.
  • Why is no one doing anything about Aria and Ezra? Her friends just accept it, her 15 yr old brother is just like okay cool and her parents eventually accept it, he’s a predator, he was her teacher.
  • Just because Aria and Ezra aren’t in rosewood doesn’t mean no one could see and recognise them.
  • Paige sucks.
  • how did Mona have the time and how did her parents not notice she was always at the lair AND where’d she get all the money from?
  • Ezra clearly doesn’t spend that much time in his Ravenswood lair through the years since every time Aria goes to his apartment unannounced he is home.
  • They send SOS but don’t write like what it means or where to meet.

Thanks so much for reading, let me know if there’s any you think I missed and comment your favorite season 1 moment.

Every qualm I have with ‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 1a…

I started watching Pretty Little Liars in 2014 when a few seasons had already aired and I myself was 14. It was a show which carried me through my high school years, I became totally obsessed. I honestly still am a bit obsessed with PLL. It for me has a bit of nostalgia in the 2010’s music selection, lack of smartphones early on, great characters and a seemingly impossible story-line. This show is the thing I put on the TV when I don’t want to think or try anything new or I need to study because I already know what happens and I don’t need to actively watch to enjoy it. But even I can’t deny that the more times you watch the more questions you have and little errors you see. Maybe some of these for me just came with moving out of the teen-aged high schooler mindset that I noticed many of these things but I thought I’d share and do one of these for every seasons because I simply had too much to say to put all of Pretty Little Liars in 1 post. That said, there will be entire series spoilers in each of these posts so if you haven’t watched all of PLL be warned.

* Disclaimer, I love Pretty Little Liars however I have not read the books so I will not comment on the books. This is in no way intended to offend any one who was involved with the creation of the show as it for me was one of those shows that captured a whole group of people. So, get ready for another long one… Here’s every qualm I have with Pretty Little Liars season 1.

There will be a few consistent qualms across these posts so I’ll start with them

  • If they had just owned up to their actions and taken responsibility for themselves they could have stopped Mona and therefore Charlotte. But they were too worried about taking responsibility for themselves that they let themselves be terrorised.
  • Ezra is such a creeper.
  • Sexualising a teacher is disgusting and the fact no one reports it throughout the show is incredible.
  • Alison is terrible
  • Mona spends a lot of time just hoping she’ll get lucky and her A messages will be heard when they aren’t texts
  • Spencer doesn’t move into the barn until the flash forward but they made a big deal about her re-doing the barn to move in, in the pilot
  • If Mona hated Alison so much for what she did to everyone why did Mona turn herself into Alison to insult people the exact same way and bully them, even using Alison’s insults?
  • How did Mona have the time to stalk all four of them all the time including at school
  • Heels everyday at high school
  • Why did no one who saw Alison the night she died come forward, none of them
  • They are so bad at protecting their belongings, they leave their bags places, don’t lock their cars
  • Why is no one doing anything about Aria and Ezra, her friends just accept it, her 15 yr old brother is just like okay cool and her parents eventually accept it, he’s a predator, he was her teacher
  • Just because Aria and Ezra aren’t in rosewood doesn’t mean no one could see and recognise them
  • Paige and Emily get together despite Paige trying to drown Emily because she was better than her
  • Paige sucks
  • How did Mona have the time and how did her parents not notice she was always at the lair AND where’d she get all the money from?
  • Ezra clearly doesn’t spend that much time in his Ravenswood lair through the years since every time Aria goes to his apartment unannounced he is home.
  • They send SOS but don’t write like what it means or where to meet

So lets get started with every qualm I have with Pretty Little Liars season 1…

1. Where did Alison get the drugs she used to drug her friends into falling asleep the night she ‘died’?

2. Aria’s family up and moves to Iceland for a year, how? how did they get a visa for their entire family to move there for a year? Was Byron working, they said he was on sabbatical? Mike and Aria didn’t object to being pulled out of school and taken away from their friends for a year? Alison can’t have been missing long before they left since they were gone a year and get back on ‘the anniversary of Alison’s disappearance’. It must have cost a fortune. It also appears they moved their entire home with them. It just doesn’t make sense that Aria’s best friend goes missing and right after their entire family moves away, what would have happened if Alison was found would she still not have come back for a year?

3. Aria gets home and the first place she goes is a bar, shes 16. Its also a bar which appears to be on the Hollis College campus, what was she doing there?

4. We all know that Ezra is a creeper, he knows Aria’s age and knows she’ll probably be going to the school and knows she’s Alison’s friend – then literally hooks up with her. She’s underage. Ezra man, you could’ve watched the girls to find what happened to Alison from the outside, you didn’t have to get with Aria to do it.

5. Wren and Melissa move into the barn that Spencer’s parents told her if she renovated she could live in, that’s messed up.

6. Why did Mona wait so long to start texting the liars? If she really wanted Hanna to herself why did she not start sending the texts after Ali went missing? Even then, Mona said they were stealing Hanna but they hadn’t gotten close again yet. Also, why did Mona send them from Alison’s perspective and how could she realistically have had the surveillance on all of them (not just Alison) back before Alison went missing.

7. The idea of students sexualising a teacher is yucky. I was in high school not that long ago myself and it’s disgusting. I was in high school when PLL came out and it was still gross back then. But they really romanticize it.

8. How did Wren and Melissa ever get together? They seem way too different. Although, Wren is also a creeper.

9. Ezra shows up to Alison’s funeral. Now when you know his whole story of how he was dating Alison this makes sense, but in his cover story he has just started teaching at the school, there aren’t really that many people at this funeral and he shows up and no one thinks it’s strange.

10.Ezra kisses Aria at her best friends funeral, a bit of a strange choice Ezra, its her best friends FUNERAL!

11. They act like Jenna is this scary mean girl – but at the beginning the only thing they really know about Jenna is that Alison didn’t like her and that they blinded her. THEY blinded this girl and they act like she’s the plague. Why weren’t they incredibly nice to her if they were so worried that she might tell that they did it? There is no reason to treat her like this especially when none of the liars actually had any ill feelings towards her (in the beginning anyway).

12. I understand that sometimes characters have to be recast in shows but it still bothers me when we see a flashback of Ian and then its suddenly a different guy when he’s reintroduced and it happens so many times in PLL. Same with the DiLaurentis’s or Jason or Kate.

13. Ian is also obviously a creeper, he dates Melissa then cheats with her 15 year old younger sister, while he’s in College whilst also dating Alison who is ALSO 15 years old. That’s gotta be statutory.

14. The DiLaurentis’s move quite quickly in my opinion, their daughter hadn’t been missing for a year and they had already moved away and sold their house, wouldn’t they have stayed hoping Alison might come back there one day (or at least Mr D).

15. Counter point, Jessica DiLaurentis knew Alison’s body was buried on the property, if she didn’t want it discovered to cover for Charles why would she sell the house and why wouldn’t she want to be close to Alison and keep an eye on Wilden.

16. Sara Harvey – she makes no sense and that’s all I have to say about her showing up at the funeral, makes no sense to me.

17. Mona spends a lot of time just hoping she’ll get lucky and her A messages will be heard, for example; the radio shout out – what if Hanna wasn’t in the car at the exact time, what if it was a different liar, what if she wasn’t listening to the radio. How many wasted messages were sent which they didn’t receive because the timing didn’t line up?

18. Wilden goes a bit hard trying to frame them, Mrs. D must have paid him heaps to cover up Alison’s murder.

19. “Telling the truth now isn’t going to make Jenna see again, it’d just ruin our lives” —- as opposed to Toby’s life, which you already ruined and could fix. At least partially anyway.

20. Maybe y’all should just not get dressed next to windows which face other people’s houses? Then you wouldn’t have people peeping in on you. That’s what curtains and blinds are for girls.

21. They question Jenna being ‘A’ even though she was sat at the table with them in episode 2 while they all got an A text

22. Ella inviting Ezra to sit with her and Aria at the cinema with them is so weird.

23. How did Wilden get off speaking to them without parents so many times?

24. Wren says his mistake was falling for the wrong sister – Wren mate, you don’t even know Spencer yet but you’ve known Melissa for like a year. Did you really not love Melissa at all? And then they get back together after he had said that?

25. Ben tries to force himself on Emily in the bathroom and she never tells anyone or reports him.

26. What was Toby doing in the girls locker room?

27. When did Maya and her bf break up?

28. How’d Mona run around Noel’s party in her ‘A’ get up without getting noticed with an outfit change, and all to steal some photo-booth photos

29. It doesn’t track that Spencer would straight copy paste Melissa’s assignment and submit it. There is no way she would be so careless as to not proof read and reword it before submitting, lucky they didn’t have turnitin back then aye.

30. They should be apologizing to Toby not treating him like hes ‘A’ if they think he’s ‘A’. even if they don’t, they should be grateful to him for taking the fall and trying to make sure he doesn’t decide to change his story.

31. Did Mr. Marin really think telling Hanna he was engaged to the woman he cheated with and was going to have a new daughter was “helping her through a rough patch”? And then doesn’t even warn her before he introduces her.

32. Ezra’s college roommate tells Ezra what we’ve all been thinking, everyone here knows the risks but I guess his book is worth jail time

33. Ezra uses the ‘A’ text to break up with Aria, if he was gonna give up so easy why’d he start with dating her instead of just doing his research without dating her

34. Sean is boring

35. Hanna rigging a door with the least amount of effort I’ve ever seen anyone put into anything…

36. Why does Alex so easily believe Melissa at the Homecoming dance – there is no reason to believe Melissa over Spencer.

37. That 2AM club doesn’t get the rep it deserves. This isn’t a PLL qualm because they use 2AM club several times but still. The 2AM club songs they use are so catchy!

38. The fortune teller is a dentist?

39. Why realistically couldn’t Hanna go literally any other time to get the Jenna file than during Homecoming.

41. How did Mona possibly get the writing on the Tarot Card and make sure that it was pulled when one of the Liars was getting their cards read and not someone else, seems a bit convenient….

And that is every qualm I have with Pretty Little Liars up until the end of homecoming. Thanks for reading, don’t forget you can like, comment or follow this blog and check out my socials @simplymythoughts_blog and Simply My Thoughts Blog on Facebook.

My problem with 13 Reasons Why…

When 13 Reasons Why first went live on Netflix I was a high school student and I like most people around me, watched it. For anyone who has not seen it or read the book, 13 Reasons Why is about the aftermath of a suicide by a female student at a school in America. Hannah Baker committed suicide and left 12 tapes naming those who caused or added to her pain. The show follows the other characters hearing their own and the reasons the others caused Hannah Baker’s suicide.

The first season of 13 Reasons Why, for me, is good. The messages and themes which were brought up really resonated with the high school experience. They presented many issues which are prevalent for teens and continued over the next few seasons to present even more. These include;

  • Bullying,
  • Rape,
  • Sexual harassment,
  • Peer pressure,
  • Addiction,
  • Abuse,
  • School shooting,
  • Criminal justice,
  • Depression,
  • Anxiety, and more.

The first season presented an important message particularly on how you can never know what is going on in someone else’s life, any small thing may make a massive impact on them and to be mindful of your actions always.

However, 13 Reasons Why has had four seasons. Season one telling Hannah Baker’s story, season two overseeing Hannah’s trial and the case against her rapist, season three about said rapist’s murder and season four about trying to get away with the murder. 13 Reasons Why began telling a story about a girl’s pain and suicide and the impact this suicide had on those around her and her family. But for me, it appears as the seasons go on this story is watered down. Season two even undermines some of the ‘reasons’ presented in season one like with Zach and the notes he didn’t throw away, but then finding out they dated after and she was happy with him for a period of time, begging the question how does him taking her notes become a reason? This made Hannah less believable and undermined somewhat the message that all these little things can equal something terrible for someone, when they made Hannah look like a liar.

Somewhere along the way this show about bullying and suicide turned into a crime show with a murder mystery third season. This for me is such a deviation from the point. I have the utmost respect for shows who make their story and they tell the tale they intended and don’t drag things out for the sake of money in a show which doesn’t support that length. For me, 13 Reasons Why is not one of these. I could appreciate the creation of Season two showing the trial processes and the importance of coming forward for victims. But to make four seasons feels like a money grab. If I wanted to watch How to Get Away With Murder, I would be. Now, I recognize that it was always a bit back and forth with the timeline. But for me, when it became a back and forth about a murder it was too much like Elite or How to Get Away With Murder that it felt almost like they were ripping off the success of crime shows.

Furthermore, 13 Reasons Why was about the 13 reasons Hannah Baker killed herself, to introduce characters who never even met her into the show makes no sense to me.

Thankfully, 13 Reasons Why did become very popular which is good for the message they were trying to tell, but because of this popularity, I feel like the third and fourth seasons were created to make money and turn it into a drama. 13 Reasons Why was no longer about suicide or the 13 reasons.

I did not personally feel a need to watch season four when it came out, I won’t say I will never but I have yet to watch it because I feel like they deviate so much from their original purpose. 13 Reasons Why wasn’t a crime show it was about bullying. But the characters keep bullying each other. So I may be wrong in my assessment of season four but I have heard it resembles season 3 in not having anything to do with Hannah anymore. Having her mum come back for a few scenes isn’t enough.

I feel like 13 Reasons Why should either have had a one season run or the two it began with. If they wanted to make a show about all these other issues they could have, they didn’t need to use the characters or story line from 13 Reasons Why, they could have made their own show to continue on and have a murder mystery or made a show to tackle the issues like steroid use, drug addiction, depression, anxiety, trauma, and more. And that’s my problem with 13 Reasons Why…

Let me know your thoughts on the show and whether you think they’re dragging it out to make more money or if you watched all four seasons. Thanks for reading!

All the characters in ‘Elite’ are terrible… (Season 1 & 2)

I recently started watching Netflix’s Elite, at the recommendation of my best friend who has seen all of Elite so far. I have only made it to season 2 but I have a lot to say about the characters. My first impression of Elite was that it reminded me, format wise, of Quicksand another foreign Netflix Original about teens and a crime. Both shows have the same back and forth timeline formula however Quicksand is focused from 1 characters perspective and takes a more criminal justice viewpoint than Elite. Disclaimer, I am really enjoying Elite so far, I like the music choices, cinematography, and the plot and am watching it in English subtitles, so this is not intended to come across as negative towards the show it is merely my feelings about each character in season 1 with a little help from season 2. So… in no particular order here is my reasons why all the characters in Elite are bad people.

1. Marina

Marina starts off seeming like the nice character of the bunch, at least towards to scholarship kids having this rebellious facade before we realize, she really is not the good one. My first issue with Marina is her relationship with Nano. She begins the school year with adopting Samuel, becoming his friend, inviting him to events with her before meeting his brother Nano. Now, Marina can’t say she didn’t know Samuel was into her because, well, it was pretty clear. But, she still sleeps with Nano after their party, at least she wasn’t together with Samu at this point, but then she cheats on Samuel with Nano while they are together and attempts to run off with him. Keeping in mind, Marina hardly knew Nano at this point, she has had a few conversations with him and they slept together a few times, she was then willing to give up her family and her entire future to run away with Nano.

Now, I recognize a large part of the reason Marina almost leaves with Nano is because of the pregnancy, so lets talk about the pregnancy. Marina had already prior to the shows run time, gotten an STI off her previous boyfriend which she now has to live with and shows shame about in the beginning of the first season. So, it was irresponsible of her to sleep with Nano and not tell him she has HIV even if it is undetectable, but it also leads me to question how she could be so careless another time and either not make sure Nano used a condom, or control her contraception, or both in order for her to get pregnant. Yes, there is a chance they did everything right and she still got pregnant because contraception is never a sure thing but…. seems unlikely statistically to me.

We then have the issue of, why did Marina date Samu in the first place, if she wasn’t into him and was more into Nano the whole time there was no reason for her to date Samuel or sleep with him. Marina leads Samu on for most of the season which is poor of her. Marina has so much pent up anger towards her family that she tells her fathers big secret about the school he built collapsing to Samu, who went to that school and knows people who were affected by it. Telling him that it was entirely her fathers fault and he knows so and there are documents that prove it. She also allows him to record her saying that and she hardly knows him yet. It is understandable that she finds this hard to live with and that yes, telling the truth would have been the right thing to do but she then doesn’t tell the truth to the authorities and there is something to be said for family loyalty.

Marina threatens the teacher with outing the fact he accepted a bribe and then actually does out his bribe in order to cover up her substance use issues. Similarly, to cover up her substance use issues again she gives up Omar as a drug dealer, I’m sure he could have gone to jail for this, even so, he feels imprisoned in his own life and family. Marina gives Nano everything he needs to steal from Carla and her family, despite their previous friendship, despite Carla trying to be there for her and reconcile.

2. Nano

Now, I personally hate Nano’s character and have been told he doesn’t get better in the later seasons, and here’s all the reasons I can’t stand him. He is Samu’s older brother which realistically means he should be interested in protecting Samu but he doesn’t. Early in the season Nano is pissed about the rich in town and the fact that Marina’s father was to blame for the school collapse. He then makes Samu come with him to graffiti Marina and Guzman’s house, despite just getting out of jail and putting Samu in danger of being charged with something. Samu has a great opportunity with his scholarship to make something of himself and Nano jeopardizes that as fast as he can.

We also have to blame Nano for the whole thing with Marina in my opinion. As you’ll probably see I’m big on family loyalty. Nano knows from the first time he meets Marina that she is Samu’s friend. Before the party Samu tells Nano he likes Marina and wants to tell her that night, then, that same night, Nano uses Marina to get inside her house and has sex with her, the girl his brother likes. Then he doesn’t tell Samu, probably because he knows he shouldn’t have done it to Samu but hey. He then cheats with Marina while her and Samu are together which is just so not cool, where’s the brotherly love man. Samu flat out asks Nano, is the baby yours and he lies to Samu’s face instead of just coming clean then has Samu hear from someone else that it is actually his and he did sleep with Marina knowing Samu liked her.

Then he tries to convince Marina to keep the baby all while his big plan to support them is to blackmail her lifelong friends. He steals from Carla’s house. That’s it, that’s the whole point. He couldn’t get it together enough to pay back what he owed that he steals from some random family. And even then, he’s too greedy, he didn’t need to take all the watches, he didn’t need to stop to grab just that one last one that Carla’s dad had taken off. In turn, this greedyness is the reason Marina is killed. So, basically, although he is innocent in the sense that he didn’t kill Marina, I didn’t mind his character being in jail because he really irritated me.

3. Samuel (Samu)

Then we have Samu, I guess nice guys do finish last aye Samu. I’m sure, had many of the events that happened at the school not happened, Samu probably would have remained a really good guy but he makes some key mistakes. For instance, he outs Marina’s HIV to his friends – which in turn leads to the message he was sending on his phone to his friends being read aloud, outing her to the entire class. Kind of a dog move Samu. Then again, he gets pissed at Marina for not telling him who the father of her child is, jumps to huge conclusion that it’s their teacher then, instead of talking to her about it he tells everyone in their class that she’s pregnant. Like, what the hell Samu can you not keep any secrets to yourself? Samu also does try to get involved in the whole, blackmail Carla’s family thing, and really, for what? He didn’t want or need the money the same way Nano did, he just felt like hurting someone else, he knew it was the wrong thing to do but he did it anyway. Then he tries the whole kid detective thing out which is just annoying and just makes him rude to everyone he may suspect. Then he really does fuck with Carla for most of the second season which feels unnecessarily cruel.

4. Guzman

Guzman is 100% just a bully. That’s pretty much it. He bullys Samu basically all the time, he bullied Pablo for giving his sister HIV, he tried to mess with Nadia for really, no reason. He didn’t know her, it was simply, shes new, shes on a scholarship and she’s Muslim and that kinda makes him a bad guy. Now Guzman tries to redeem himself many times through the season but it honestly just doesn’t take with him going to beat up Nano and all of them and him outing Omar to Nadia.

He also couldn’t just wait for Ander to feel comfortable coming out to him that he had to do it for him. Guzman also leads Lu on by sleeping with her and acting like a couple with her then dropping her then dating her simply because he’s messed up and grieving. He also cheats on Lu rather than just breaking up with her because he loves Nadia. He also just really messes with Polo’s head which impacts his relationship and all the other events to follow. But at least Guzman tries to be better sometimes. Although, Guzman, breaking up with the girlfriend you never loved for another woman after you cheat on her does not make you a hero, stop acting like Nadia’s hero because you finally let Lu go.

5. Lucrecia (Lu)

Lu is also just a bully, she says things just to hurt people, she blackmails people. She blackmailed a teacher to win a trophy that she didn’t really want that badly, she just didn’t want anyone else to get it. She even said that the scholarship meant nothing to her, she just wanted to be the best. Lu does however try to be a good friend to Guzman and Carla and simply wants Guzman to actually love her and reciprocate her feelings. But, that isn’t an excuse to be a typical mean girl. Let’s not even talk about the Valerio thing…I look forward to seeing where the writer take her character in the next few seasons.

6. Ander

I really like Ander’s character, he’s dealing with a lot of relatable issues like coming to terms with his sexuality, deciding who he is and who he wants to be and navigating parental pressure and expectations. However, Ander outs Omar to practically everyone, including Omar’s father (indirectly), without Omar’s knowledge or blessing which is strange as he had only just come out himself. Another thing is the Pablo incident, we hear several times that Guzman and his friends assault Pablo so he will leave the school and as revenge for giving Marina HIV, this is a pretty poor choice for Ander which he then makes a second time when going with Guzman to attack Nano. He also has no tact when speaking to Omar’s dad about the way he runs his family making him come across as really ignorant to what Omar’s situation actually is, which I guess isn’t a character flaw it is just ignorance which I hope we see him overcome and learn from. However, I don’t really see how he is going to learn from these mistakes because he gets away with it all pretty easily. Then we have the clear insensitivity towards Omar’s problems constantly, sure Ander is dealing with things too but Omar is finding his identity there’s no need to be so dismissive. Also, he does cover for Polo which is complicated, he is trying to help one friend at the expense of potentially Nano, Guzman and Marina and also is lying to everyone including when Carla confessed.

7. Polo

Polo is a confusing one, he starts off seeming simply a bit insecure before moving on to become a bit controlling of Carla and has a lot of issues about losing Carla whilst being confused about his sexuality and attraction to Christian. However, this leads him to attempt to have Christian sell himself to Polo in exchange for, well money, a career, a future which Christian does and then Polo turns around and doesn’t give Christian the incentive. This in itself is just not good, to prey on someone who is desperate for a way into a better lifestyle. On another note, I think it’s become clear I’m not letting go of the assaults on Pablo or Nano so that’s another strike against Polo. A more pressing one however is the obvious, Polo is the murderer. He murders Marina because he is angry and thinks he can threaten her to get the watch back for Carla, but he murders her. Polo made the choice to pick up the trophy and hit her, then he makes the choice to leave her and not help her while she bleeds out. This is the nail in Polo’s coffin. He also allows someone to sit in jail for his crime for months while maintaining being Guzman’s best friend. Polo should have come clean and the fact he didn’t and he had Carla and Christian and Ander lie for him makes him selfish. These are the reasons Polo is a bad guy. Some may say accident, he didn’t mean to kill her, some may say crime of passion, he was angry and she was saying things he didn’t want to hear, but for me, he still picked up the trophy and hit her, he didn’t need to do that and he could have decided not to.

8. Omar

Omar is a drug dealer, now I guess I get his reasoning and it doesn’t necessarily make him a bad person but it isn’t ideal. I know this one is a bit weak but I love Omar, I totally appreciate his struggles and why he makes his decisions. So I guess not everyone is a bad person but still, made a better title didn’t it? It also does a bit lead him to treating Ander not very well because he is struggling with a lot of things but yeah, I love Omar. Omar also isn’t that actively present in season 2 so there’s not much else to say.

9. Christian

Christian effectively seems to have no morals in season 1. He lets himself be bought as a sex object and a little pet for Polo and Carla. Christian allows himself to be bribed into being in a relationship with all of them, gets bribed into doing things he doesn’t want to do with Polo and bribed into letting his best friend who he has known for years, who he knows will likely be convicted just based on him having a criminal history, sit in jail. He also enters this relationship with Carla and Polo by trying to be the guy she cheats on her boyfriend with, all the while staying in the relationship intending to take Polo’s girlfriend. Most importantly, Christian knows who murdered a girl in his class, who murdered Nano and Marina’s baby, who murdered the girl Samu is in love with, and he says nothing. For months Christian has his fun with Carla and her money, then momentarily changes his mind and allows himself to be bought off again after the accident. Christian is just a guy mesmerized by money, power and privilege and that is his problem and it makes him incredibly selfish and without loyalty. Honestly, he kind of deserved to get hit by that car…

10. Nadia

Nadia does seem to act like she’s better than the others at the school, that is one point I will agree with Lu on, she presents herself as better than everyone else there but realistically she isn’t. She gives up parts of her faith to fit in and for the advantages giving up those things might have. She is also very judgemental of the other character, particularly Marina which is sad as Marina actually is a friend to her. She drops Marina because of the HIV thing and just judges every choice Marina makes, but then drops to the level of everyone else when she finds out about the bribe and immediately outs Lu for bribing the teacher. She didn’t even have proof, or know it was true and he lost his job. Granted he took the bribe but he did the right thing in the end and was punished regardless. I just view Nadia as very judgemental despite her own shortfalls with lying to her parents and not respecting them, not really understanding Omar, the continual judgement towards her sister who she hasn’t seen in a long time. Then the rebellion against her family and her beliefs leading her to drink and dress differently and wear her hijab less. Now, I recognize that I can make no real comments on her beliefs as a non-muslim non-religious person, and she is able to make her own choices it just makes her seem hypocritical to judge others. However, I feel a lot of people would agree that her getting with Guzman while he was still with Lu is pretty poor form. So get off your moral high ground Nadia! I guess all of these don’t make her a bad person necessarily they just make her a bad friend and a judgemental person so far in the show.

11. Carla

For me, Carla also isn’t that bad, she definitely has her faults and uses Christian but he knows he is being used and they (Carla and Polo) sort of, compensate him, for being their toy. She does then also try to use him to steal the watch from Marina. What her real issue is is, she helps Polo cover up killing Marina. I understand that Polo means a lot to Carla and all but, she lets an innocent man sit in prison for her ex-boyfriends crime. She does also help her father cover up whatever it is that he needs to be covering up. Essentially, this is what makes Carla a bad person for me but one of the more interesting and more compelling characters. Her finally confessing does not remove the fact she did cover it up and I know she does flop back on her confession (whoops a season 3 spoiler for anyone who hasn’t seen).

To sum it all up, these characters are all young teenagers finding themselves and making mistakes along the way but, honestly, they make so many choices I can’t agree with and they majorly, don’t just affect themselves when they make these choices. The characters aren’t perfect but I guess that is part of the appeal, they aren’t expected to be perfect and they’re just being teenagers I guess. However, I wouldn’t say these are good role models by any means and all of the characters are very flawed (as we all are). I do however, wish there was more… ramifications… for outing the characters. Ander outed Omar to all of his friends and Omar didn’t really do anything or say anything, Guzman outed Omar to Nadia and just got away with it, Samu indirectly told everyone Marina had HIV and she wasn’t mad. These private things that need to and should be dealt with in a private way and in the way the person affected wishes weren’t. I feel like it isn’t okay to out people’s sexuality, in the words of Simon from ‘Love Simon’; “that’s supposed to be my thing. I’m supposed to be the one to decide when and where and who knows. You took that from me!“. I feel like this message should have been somewhere so those watching know that doing these things to people isn’t okay.

All that said, I look forward to making it through the rest of Elite and seeing where they take these characters and seeing more of the new editions I did not discuss here.
