woman in the house across the street

Biggest plot holes in ‘The woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window’…

Netflix

Kristen Bell puts her Veronica Mars hat back on in ‘The woman in the house across the street from the girl in the window’ in 2022. This short series was just released to Netflix starring Kristen Bell as a depressed, almost stalker with a drinking problem. While this show was a take on dark humor and satire, the satire was not blatant enough for me to forgive some of the more farfetched issues. But as usual, spoilers are evident.

The daughter:

We hear early on how Anna’s daughter has died and can see that she has not moved on from the trauma. As the story goes on we understand more about what happened to the daughter. Anna was happily married to her now ex-husband who worked for the FBI as a criminal psychologist or forensic psychologist, whatever term you prefer. Now as this is the classic case of a untrustworthy narrator we as the viewers have to battle between what she is actually seeing and what is happening in her head or because of the drinking. I personally thought when I heard the story that she was lying as she is an untrustworthy narrator. Even to the fact she admits to lying to her therapist (in general) before anyone corroborates her story of what happened.

Essentially, it’s bring your daughter to work day, but Douglas is a forensic psychologist for the FBI who interviews offenders, particularly serial killers it would seem. So, for some reason he agrees to take his daughter with him. To work. At a prison. In an interview room. With a cannibal murderer.

From the start we can likely all agree, this doesn’t happen in the FBI. The politics surrounding it are too much, liability, insurance, child development, endangering a child. So. what!

Then we get to the nitty gritty, he takes her in to the room with him and the cannibal murderer. I think not! You would be hard press to convince me the prison warden would allow this, let alone that the daughter was allowed in on the pretense of FBI interviewing. But alas, we continue.

Old mate leaves the room for a second to speak to a guard, while his, did I mention 6 year old, 6 YEAR OLD daughter is in fact, still in the room. Naturally, the door locks. Somehow the door locks. Which couldn’t possibly have been unlocked again a moment later?

So, a 6 year old and a cannibal sit in a room, with apparently no guards? None at all. There is a 6 year old in the room and no guard is present. That is a liability and insurance nightmare.

Finally, we hear, the little girl is killed and eaten by the cannibal. Graphic, yes. But I have to wonder how. It has plagued me ever since watching, how the door could be locked for so long that the guards and her father couldn’t get her out of the room. Granted he was a pretty big guy and she would have been easy to kill, but, to eat as well? There was enough time for him to kill and eat a little girl before they could get the door open.

Side note, how does her dad every move on from that and go back to work?

“The mailbox isn’t fixed yet”

They show that Buell started working for them, and Anna says he was hired to fix their mailbox, before she even had Elizabeth. Elizabeth was 6 when she died, so he worked for them at least 6 years and Douglas didn’t know he hadn’t fixed the mailbox? I mean clearly Anna didn’t really mind that much but still, he had worked there over 6 years minimum before Douglas moved out.

Kid killer

My final real plot issue is just Emma even being able to pull off being a murderer. Emma is also like 6 years old and supposedly murders her dad’s girlfriend, for not buying a chocolate bar (but I’m not here to dig into psychopathy). After killing Lisa, in a quite bloody way might I add, she is able to dismember her, get her out of the house, dump her body , clean all the blood then get back home. Her dad meanwhile is in the house, practicing ventriloquism in the bathroom and before the Police arrive. Now firstly, how long is his act because my god that would take a lot of time. Secondly, we all have seen blood isn’t that easy to clean. Thirdly, I have heard that it is actually incredibly difficult for a adult person to dismember someone, the actual cutting through the muscle and bone is pretty difficult. She is a tiny child. But say somehow she did do it, the amount of blood would ruin the floor. She got Lisa’s dismembered body into a little trolley then rolled her around the neighbourhood to steal a murder weapon.

A weapon which was not in fact used? But apparently that didn’t matter to anyone. Let alone the palette knife shown doesn’t appear to be able to break skin from my perspective, even in this image of a set of palette knives, only one has a sharp point. But, the force you would need seems uncharacteristic of a 6 year old and seems like it would make a far different wound. But hey, I’m not a medical examiner.

11pcs wood colour) - CONDA Palette Knife Painting TOOLS Metal Knives Wood Handle Stainless Steel Palette Knife : Amazon.com.au: Home Improvement

Again, how can we possibly believe Neil didn’t know anything, didn’t hear anything or find any blood. The show also seems to borderline ignore actual physical evidence or forensic practices. At least they have the tech side down I guess.

The casserole dish

How many of the exact same casserole dish can one person, who lives alone and doesn’t have guests over have lying around? Why are they all the same? Where does she keep them? She smashes at least 3 of them then has at least 1 more. They are heavy dishes, probably relatively expensive and take up a lot of space. While this is more of a joke issue, it still haunts me.

So, setting aside all of these issues, it was a really fun show. I really enjoyed watching it as I always do with Kristen Bell. I would 100% recommend it to people, I just personally can’t get over these few things. I feel like if there was more random farfetched stuff going on it would be fine, you could just accept its a weird wacky show. For instance, Teenage Bounty Hunters is a different Netflix series which was also great, but, it leans far more into the satire and humour of it all with little serious plot lines. Therefore we can just accept that the world we are watching doesn’t make total sense, it happens outside of our understanding of the world. The Woman in the House just didn’t go far enough for me to pretend they don’t fit or make sense.

TV couples who ruin shows for me…

Movies, Netflix, pretty little liars, Uncategorized

Last week we had a romance movie post, this week we are swinging back the opposite direction. TV Couples who ruins shows for me. Because look, not all couples are meant to be and lots of them are toxic on TV. Sometimes, it is better to be alone than with someone, if they are the wrong person. So, here is my list of most (not all), couples who I hate on TV. May we all remember the wonderful friends and family members in our lives this Galentine’s day. Shout-out to all the people who support me and this blog!

*disclaimer, not all of these are necessarily couples but fan favs.

In no particular order…

Duncan Kane and Veronica Mars

I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, Duncan Kane is so boring, he just seems like a child. He acts like a child the whole time and he is way too boring for Veronica. I was so glad when he left the show. Moreover, they both believed they were siblings, he believed it before they slept together, which is just disgusting, but she also believed it later. How do you date again after that?

yucky…

Veronica and Piz

If you can’t tell, I love Veronica Mars as a show, I really do, just man, everyone except Logan was a bit boring. Piz was especially boring, it felt like they were trying to give Piz and inch because he was resident nice guy, but he wasn’t that nice, he was boring and she had way more chemistry with Logan. I know her and Logan are super toxic but I can’t.

Betty and Archie

I just don’t like how Archie never saw Betty in that way, she put herself out there saying she loved him then he rejected her and dated countless other girls, then Betty found happiness for years with Jughead and they just make sense together. Even a whiff of Betty and Archie made me completely stop watching Riverdale. They couldn’t just stay best friends? She and Jughead couldn’t just move forward without bringing Archie back into the mix. Also, “I will never be good enough for you Betty” or whatever he said in the pilot feels like such a cop out to me.

Callie and Brandon

Brandon seemed to Callie like an easy way to self-destruct. She constantly turned to him any time she felt things were going too well or a small inconvenience happened she would turn to him. They were trying to be siblings, they lived together as siblings for years, It never should have happened.

Every time there was a problem with her being adopted she would go back to Brandon and date him or have sex with him or whatever, which only makes everything perpetually worse. Callie was the most self destructive character I personally have seen but Brandon was just along for the ride it seemed. They never even really made sense to start with, he was in a relationship when they met, there was no reason he had to ‘fall for Callie’. Just bad vibes all around for me.

Finn and Rachael

Sorry but they are both just too boring. Finn is the same as Duncan where he seems too much like a child and Rachel is so annoying. Finn also just didn’t respect her at the start of the show. I don’t know, maybe they get better later in the show and grow as people, but in the beginning when they dated the first few times it was terrible.

Miranda Bailey and nurse Eli

She could’ve had Ben that whole time but went for the young “attractive” asshole of a nurse. Who made her do so many things which she would never have done. Eli was like a vacation from who Miranda was, he made what he thought more important than what she thought.

I really never felt like their relationship was organic, it seemed like he was pushing her constantly and she was acting like a teenager. We all know it was just an excuse to create tension with Ben before they got back together so…

Rory and Jess

I know lots of people love Rory and Jess but I just don’t, but more on that in a dedicated post coming soon…

Sorry but, having similar interests doesn’t mean you are a good match or good people.

Iris and Barry

I’m sorry I just don’t gel with the whole, one best friend always loved the other and they never saw them, until, they did. Iris got engaged to another man and it took her finding out Barry was flash to be into him (also her fiance dying but, regardless), I just don’t love it. They grew up together and she never saw him. There are so many plot issues which revolve around, Iris not loving Barry and its just too much.

Clary and Jace

Look, I think if you hear that you’re siblings than even finding out you aren’t, that should be tainted, shouldn’t be allowed

Ross and Rachel

Ross has never deserved Rachel, I’m sorry but it’s true. He was so possessive of her early on considering they weren’t together and he always under estimated her and was such a misogynist. However, I will admit I have no sentimental attachment to Friends because I never really watched it until recently, but watching it now, with a relatively open mind. Ross is a terrible person. He is homophobic, spiteful, rude and much more. Rachel deserved the best.

Stefan and Elena

They are just so boring. That’s it, so bland. Stefan is also basically so obsessed with Elena he almost misses Caroline completely, because he was waiting for Elena to leave Damon for him? Honestly, I would have just picked Caroline from the start.

Ezra and Aria

Their whole story is just so messed up, to know she is 15 and date her, and underage girl because he wants to investigate her, then continues to date her whilst being her teacher and continually lying about it. It is just so yucky. Also, romanticizing them for the entire show is a terrible and potentially predatory message to send to the shows young audience.

Waitlist and Rebecca,

Yes I choose to call him Waitlist…

Also, just boring, I am way more into Waitlist and Laurel. There was no real reason for Wes and Rebecca to actually get together, they didn’t have similar interests or lives, she was so rude to him from the second they met, they were so distrusting of each other. Great show though!

Paige and Emily

They just have no chemistry to me, I also think starting with trying to drown Emily is not the way.

Emily and Alison,

Alison is the worst so that’s that, but she also manipulated Emily countless times, she shouldn’t have gotten back with Alison.

Spencer and JJ

JJ marries Will, has a baby with him and is married to him for years, she works with Spencer that entire time, but then they try to throw something together between them as the show is ending. That is so disrespectful to Will, I love Will, he is the bright shining light saying that you can work at the BAU and have a loving family. We should never negate JJ and Will’s relationship and love.

Spencer and Caleb

Even if Hanna said it was okay it is so iffy for them to get together and they were just a terrible couple which ruins Caleb and Hanna entirely as well as the end of the show. Caleb and Spencer made such good borderline best friends, but it felt so wrong for them to be together which jeopardized Hanna and Spencer’s friendship. Just a bad move for me from the writers. Like come on, Spencer and Caleb could at least have waited til Hanna was actually married.

Izzie on Greys with anyone.

Sorry if you love Izzie or love Izzie and Karev but they are all terrible to me. Look, Denny was her patient so she shouldn’t have crossed that line and in real life I doubt she would have thrown her career away. Alex cheats on her, stands her up, treats her terribly then she gets back with him and they get married, not because either of them should have been married but because she was meant to die. And George was just terrible, awful.

So, I’m sure I could spend years and years adding to this list and remembering more but that felt like enough this time. Let me know your thoughts on any of the couples I have mentioned in the comments, or if you have any couples you hate. I’d love to hear your lists. Don’t forget to like or share this post and you can always follow my socials or this blog to know when I upload. Thanks for reading! Happy Galentine’s Day

Everything I was obsessed with in 2020…

Uncategorized

So, as we all know, 2020 was quite the year, but there was plenty of time to be watching tv shows which I view as a plus. So I decided to let y’all know what shows got me through those long lock downs and online university. This year brought a lot of change for most of us but for me, one thing it brought was this blog so I want to thank everyone who has looked at my site or any of my posts, those who have followed, liked or commented, over these last 6(ish) months. It means so much to me so thank you and I hope you enjoy this list of mainly not 2020 titles…

I am choosing to skip certain shows which are always on my mind, for instance, Pretty Little Liars and The Vampire Diaries, I feel no reason to explain these, they just speak to me and are on a constant cycle in my house.

Veronica Mars

So, I discovered Veronica Mars early in 2020/late 2019 and it quickly made its way to the top of my all time favourite shows and I haven’t stopped loving it! It’s on Stan Australia now if you haven’t given it a chance yet.

Grey’s Anatomy

Grey’s Anatomy is always a good time and I watched all the seasons back to back during this year. Obviously helping me with the Derek Shepherd post… But nonetheless, I enjoyed it the second time through then started watching again (what can I say, I missed Lexie).

Criminal Minds:

I love Criminal Minds and I have for years, but this year I did the same as Grey’s Anatomy and I watched it start to finish. I can’t see a point where I wouldn’t be obsessed with Criminal Minds. My favorite episodes are the grossest/wackiest. For instance, amputation+reattachment to other people, anything with dolls, etc.

Don’t ask me why I love it so much because I don’t have an answer but I do, similarly to how I love SVU.

Keeping up with the Kardashians:

I can’t believe I have been sleeping on Kardashians for so long, but since it arrived on Netflix this year, and I got Hayu I have been loving Kardashians, I always thought to watch it you needed to care about the Kardashians and be fans of them but it is so much more down to earth than that, and it is making me like them as more than just these figure heads. It is also really funny sometimes. So, I have been loving getting to watch it! I am only 6 seasons in at this point but still. Honestly, if you liked it, Hayu has been fun for me.

Dance Moms:

Who doesn’t love Dance Moms? I for sure do, this meant I got Hayu specifically to watch Dance Moms start to finish and it doesn’t disappoint. Those kids are so talented it still blows me away and the drama doesn’t get old. I don’t know what it is but this year Dance Moms really got me again. I do however, feel truly terrible for the kids who were on it, growing up in that environment, so I hope it was as contrived as some say.

If you want a post on Dance Moms in 2021 comment down below or let me know on socials and I’ll be happy to!

The 100:

This is the year the 100 really clicked for me, I’ve obviously seen it previously but never past season 3 until this year. And truly I have watched the 100 so many times this year. So look forward to some more posts about it next year! I will admit I am still mainly sticking to my comfort seasons (1 and 2) on a loop but still, I’ve been watching it pretty consistently all year.

Here’s my the 100 post if you missed it;

https://simplymythoughts.blog/2020/09/26/my-problem-with-the-100/

How to Get Away With Murder:

I was loving this one too, as a serial re-watcher I watched a lot of HTGAWM because it is so easy to watch while doing other things. I love putting this on while I do my uni work or catch up on notes. Especially with the 5th season only going up on Netflix this year there was lots to rewatch!

Upper Middle Bogan:

What a classic. I honestly for years have judged Upper Middle Bogan based on it’s poster but after finally giving it a go I am entirely obsessed. I can’t explain it but it had that same quirky comedy vibe but in Australia, I feel like it is as close as we are going to get to something like The Office in Australia ( sorry Rostered On). Or, maybe it’s closer to these next two shows but in Australia and that just makes it great. I love a funny true Aussie show because, man some of the stuff here is strange.

Kim’s Convenience:

I seriously don’t know what to tell you about this but I’ve seen all of it and I love it. It is such a strange show but I find it so funny and enjoyable to watch.

Schitt’s Creek:

Much like the last two, I just can’t explain it but its amazing. I really put off Schitt’s Creek for a while until I really watched it and realized how good it is, for a show about a family of rich, selfish and not down to earth people, it is really funny, special mention to this scene;

Credit to owner of the video

But more than that, you see these characters grow so much as people, finding out who they actually are and what they want, a family who didn’t know each other at all became so incredibly close they can hardly bare the thought of not being together. It is just super heartwarming and so well done.

So, there are the shows I binged the most during 2020, I got a lot of watch time done clearly and this blog has helped me with that! It has also given me the ability to watch endless tv shows whilst feeling somewhat productive so thanks everyone who reads for helping me rationalise this to myself. And Also, just another huge thank you to everyone who has followed, liked, commented or read any of my posts this year, it means so much to me to be able to explain my feelings about these shows and express myself in this space. So, I will be back in 2021 for another post!

Happy New Year everyone!

My biggest television pet peeves…

Uncategorized

I think it’s probably pretty clear by now that I watch a lot of TV. Hence my having my own dedicated blog. But, there are a multitude of consistent things used in TV shows which really annoy me. So, here is my list of my biggest pet peeves with examples from just a few shows. Hope you enjoy!

You can tell that they almost never fill coffee cups or mugs…

Just fill the coffee cup with water so it’s weighted correctly. That’s it. It is so obvious when the cup is empty cause they practically throw them around because it’s so light. It makes me so angry. Is that just me? It’s like they put the lid on a takeaway cup and think I can’t tell it’s empty.

Women wearing heels all the time!

For instance, women wearing stilettos to high school everyday. That is incredibly unrealistic. Even in superhero shows and crime shows the women have heels on. HEALS ARE NOT EASY TO RUN IN SO I DON’T BELIEVE YOU. Don’t bring young women up in a world which tells us we need to be wearing high heels everywhere to be successful and beautiful, or even just that we should be. I’m talking to you Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl.

I don’t know about you but; if I was in a role which I may need to chase someone (i.e. super hero, police officer, doctor) I don’t think my choice of shoe would be heeled. Maybe that’s just me…

Continuity problems:

For example, How I Met Your Mother didn’t decide that Robin was Canadian until the second season – then they decided she was a Canadian teen pop sensation but she still has issues with her dad having wanted a son in the later seasons and was apparently a tomboy.

Arrow: Now, I never caught up on Arrow so I haven’t finished it to see how they explain this but, Oliver Queen gets trapped on a deserted island, only he doesn’t because it isn’t deserted. But also, there is no one there 5 years later when he is rescued. But also, he goes back to Sterling City for a hot second, and he spends a lot of time in China trying to deal with a bio-weapon. And I’m sure a lot of other stuff. Before he somehow has to go back to the island, sit around there alone growing a beard and setting up his little signal fire, then finally get rescued to go back home. I recognise they probably explain this somehow but it really infuriated me to watch him do all these things not even on the island during the 5 years he was presumed dead. INCLUDING going back to Sterling City and seeing Thea!

Casting way out of the real age range:

We constantly see in Hollywood they cast way above the age they are portraying especially for teens and young adults. This really just skews children and teen’s ideas of how they are supposed to look at a certain age when most of the time those playing 15/16 year old kids are in their mid 20’s. Why can’t we just cast close to the age of the character?

Recasting:

I understand there can be a need to recast actors in the industry because actors choose not to come back or what not but it can be really jarring as a viewer. For example, after several seasons watching Jake T. Austin in ‘The Fosters’ (on Stan), they recast him with Noah Centineo. Jake played that character for years then they just put Noah in and hoped no one would care that much. Especially when it is hard to really play the character the exact same way a different actor did. This same thing happens in Pretty Little Liars where they recast Jason after he made several appearances. It may sometimes be unavoidable but it is still really jarring as a viewer.

We so often see people in shows having super private conversations which cannot be heard by others, happen in rooms full of people!

For instance, the Liars chat about ‘A’ constantly at school and parties and what not, do they really think they are being secretive. Aria constantly talks about Ezra at school when he is a teacher there. The Keating 5 just talk about murder all the time in front of so many people. Yes, none of these people are being spoken to but, people can hear your conversation even if they aren’t trying to listen. I just feel like you wouldn’t realistically talk about having murdered people in public.

Trying to be super sneaky and hidden whilst also shinning a torch everywhere telling everyone where you are…

This happens so often in horror and crime related shows. It really grinds my gears when people are trying to hide from something or corner them and they shine a flashlight down the entire hallway. I understand needing to see but it is really not hidden. If I was hiding from the Police in a dark house with the lights off, the Police shining their torch all around would signal me to where they are in order to continue hiding.

“Slow Burn”:

When a show doesn’t have and interesting beginning or they have to do heaps of exposition. For instance, I tried watching ‘The Witcher’ and only made it 1 episode in because, well, it was boring. Not much really happened in the first episode whilst at the same time they were trying to throw so much information at the audience to set the scene. I personally (and I know many won’t agree) would have preferred if they had done some sort of intro scene or narration to set up the world we are in, like in Avatar the Last Airbender or Vampire Academy, The 100, etc. Sometimes narrative exposition is annoying but if the show is going to throw lots of lore and information about supernatural beings and whatnot, I find it kind of annoying not to. I felt the same in The Haunting of Bly Manor and several other shows. Moral being, your pilot needs to be interesting and exciting but also easy to follow. I don’t want to struggle to understand and interpret what is going on because I won’t finish the show.

Changing your title song part way through the show:

I have seen many shows which have done this and just randomly switched songs or moved to a different version of the same song and I just cant stand it. By the time they change the song I’m already so used to the sound of it that every time after that, when I hear the different version of the song, it puts me off. So, thanks Veronica Mars specifically for this one.

Title sequences that don’t fit:

I feel like some shows make a title sequence before they really realize what the vibe of the show is going to be and the title scene just doesn’t fit. For instance, Pretty Little Liars, I love Pretty Little Liars but I will never understand why they made the title sequence as it was, the colouring wasn’t the same, the song didn’t feel like the right tone for the show, all of it feels off to me.

credit to owner of video

Similarly, Grey’s Anatomy; I also love Grey’s however, when you go back to the early seasons it is really off putting seeing the Grey’s title sequence as it, for me at least, doesn’t fit the show. The title sequence they put in makes Grey’s look like it is far more sexual than it is, yes there are a lot of relationships and drama in Grey’s but there is also a hell of a lot of medicine and the title scene, if I hadn’t seen the show first, would have made me not want to watch the show because of the message and vibe it gives off.

She’s the only girl who doesn’t throw herself at me, so I like her…

What a tired storyline which is really quite disgusting when you think about it. Let’s consider just recently, the entire premise of the Kissing Booth was he liked her because everyone else wanted him, gross! This also kind of perpetuates that most girls will just throw themselves at an attractive man which is just disrespectful. Complex characters please!

One best friend has always loved the other – then they date…

I really hate this one too. Just think of a better plot because if one friend has always loved the other, and the other never saw them that way then why do they deserve to suddenly realize how great their friend is, why didn’t they notice before.

And obviously we can’t forget;

Main Character syndrome…

But, I’ll spare y’all from hearing this one again, if you want to know more about this one check out my post here:

Now, I’m sure that isn’t all the pet peeves I have but it’s all I could think of for this post. Please comment yours down below and whether any of mine made it on to your list! I’d love if you checked out some or my other posts of my socials down below:

Main character syndrome…

Uncategorized

I don’t now if anyone else feels this but I seem to have a slight issue with likeability of main characters in lots of television. This can make it hard for me to watch some of these shows which I really do like, except I don’t like the main character or main love interest. Now this isn’t all shows, some shows I really appreciate the main character or main love interest but for many of the shows I love I seem to find the main characters irritating. I am curious if this is a phenomenon others experience or these are my own issues or choice writing. So, I’m going to refer to this as main character syndrome – making the main character or love interest of the main character un-apologetically boring, cliche or just the least likeable of the characters. Here’s some examples for you;

Meredith Grey (Grey’s Anatomy)

I find Meredith a terrible friend most of the time, starting with George and ending with being a poor sister to Amelia (okay sister-in-law) and Lexi (half-sister). She also is just very whiney and selfish in my opinion. I feel like she definitely has her moments where she is a good character but across the board she is standoffish, rude and not understanding.

Derek Shepard (Grey’s Anatomy) –

Derek is so manipulative from the start and I feel like people forget that he lied about being married, then chose to stay with his wife instead of Meredith, got all angry about her being with other men before finally choosing to be with her. He is incredibly condescending towards the other characters and needs to be the best. I cannot stand team Derek and he honestly impacts my feelings towards Meredith making me like her even less. Derek has to be in charge and has to be in the spotlight even if he truly isn’t the best. But characters in the show constantly say how good a guy he is, honestly show me where! Not so Mr. Dreamy to me….

Clarry Fairchild (Shadow Hunters)

Clarry is so incredibly irritating to me, I have the utmost respect for her actress but she leads Simon on for years then instantly starts dating Jace, finds out he’s her brother so goes on to date Simon but really still loves Jace then finds out Jace isn’t her brother and goes back to him. She also makes everything about her (although, I guess a lot of the problems facing them are about her) and she kind of just walks into the Institute having never held a weapon and suddenly everyone (except Alec) is cool with her and she can fight super quickly.

Elena Gilbert (The Vampire Diaries) –

Elena Gilbert is boring. She is a boring girl who just happened to be a doppelganger but early on in TVD she has no substance to me. She’s just playing through the motions of her life not being active in any of it. Admittedly I do think her character improves as she becomes a vampire but in the beginning everything about her screams bland from her fashion to her hair to her personality. The only interesting things about her were that her parents were dead and Katherine (who was a far more interesting character with way more depth).

Marissa Cooper (The OC) –

I have very few words for Marissa I just really couldn’t stand her, I couldn’t even make it to her death because she irritated me so much I had to stop watching. Ryan wasn’t particularly likeable to me either but in my opinion he was far better as a character all the times him and Marissa weren’t together. Marissa was just so self-destructive.

Stefan Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries) –

As Elena said, Stefan is the safe option, he’s the one who listens, but he’s also very bland. The most interesting thing about Stefan for me is his addiction but a characters addiction should not be the most interesting thing about them. If Elena and Stefan had ended up together their lives really would have been as boring as if she had stayed human and married Matt (no shade to Matt). He also really needs to get over Elena faster, it is so boring watching Stefan love Elena and not understand that she loves Damon even if he’s bad for her. He also really dogs Caroline for a long time before they finally get together.

Detective Stabler (Special Victims Unit) –

Detective Stabler is a bad cop, he just is, he is a poor investigator, he’s way too opinionated about the cases and the people involved (I guess so is Olivia but hey), he is constantly using unnecessary force against the public and he is always rude especially to Olivia. I for one am not excited to see Stabler return to SVU in the coming seasons.

Alison DiLaurentis (Pretty Little Liars) –

Alison DiLaurentis, whilst not entirely a main character in PLL I will still discuss. She’s a terrible friend obviously, she used so many people before and after she ran away ranging from her friends to the pilot she dated so she could live a double life to the Police. Then after years of screwing with Emily and marrying someone else they decide they should be together. Alison has to be my least favourite of Emily’s love interests and I really think Emily got a bad bunch compared to the other characters. Alison also completely disregards her friends feelings all the time but especially towards Charlotte in the flash forward. She is also obviously extremely manipulative.

Tara Webster (Dance Academy) –

Now this one might be a bit more obscure, for those who don’t know, Dance Academy is an Australian teen drama about Ballet dancers in the National Academy of Dance and I have a lot to say about it that might make it into it’s own dedicated blog but for now…. Tara is the main character. Bland, untalented, childish. I can’t understand how Tara got into the academy but when she’s there, she blatantly ignores her teachers, goes straight for her best friends brother, risking their friendship, then cheats and basically ignores Kat most of the time. She’s entirely self-obsessed and boy crazy.

Duncan Kane (Veronica Mars) –

Duncan Kane sleeps with Veronica while thinking she’s his sister. He is also incredibly boring and acts like a child in my opinion. Dates the popular girl – effectively using her because Veronica ‘is his sister’ until she wants him back. Then he literally runs off with his ex-girlfriends (and his) baby. GOOD RIDDANCE. Now I love Veronica Mars and I get not everyone likes Logan, and yes, Veronica and him were quite toxic but I have to love them, two very flawed individuals trying their best to love each other even if it doesn’t work sometimes. But Duncan for me was the worst of the show.

Hannah Baker (13 Reasons Why)

Hannah Baker is a sad story, I’ll give you that. It is upsetting to watch the events in her life unfold up to her suicide, But… she decided she would bulldoze everyone else’s life in the process of ending hers which feels like payback. Was everything that each character did bad, yes, but was it worth blaming them for your death, I don’t think so. Had Bryce Walker not raped Hannah Baker she likely would not have committed suicide, so to blame the other characters for taking her notes and writing her name on a hot list is offensive. It makes for a good story about the impact of small actions however it doesn’t make me care for her character as a character.

Rae (My Mad Fat Diary)

Rae was such a strange character to me, obviously she was dealing with a lot of personal issues throughout the show and a lot of those were relatable for the audience. But honestly, I felt like you almost couldn’t root for her because she behaved so terribly and she treated her friends poorly, treated Finn poorly because of her own insecurities and was terrible to her mother the entire series. I can’t understand why they made the main character a character who I couldn’t fully get behind or fully root for. All her friends were more likeable than her and more interesting. I respect My Mad Fat Diary for really going over body image issues as a core to this show, but, Rae for me wasn’t the character to look to for personal growth and becoming confident and accepting of your own body and prioritizing health. If you’d like to hear more on My Mad Fat Diary let me know in the comments.

A few other notable mentions for me include Clarke from The 100, Wes from How to Get Away With Murder, Finn from Glee, Tori from Victorious, Rory Gilmore and Emma from the Netflix Original Scream.

Those are just a few examples of what I have decided to call ‘main character syndrome’. I find it very confusing why shows make their main character so boring and irritating. It can seriously impact my willingness to watch a show if I dislike the main character or love interests. Would it not be better to have compelling main characters who show personal growth. Take The Vampire Diaries, Caroline for me is the best character in the show, she is compassionate, confident, caring, powerful and a great friend. But she didn’t start off that way, she grew over the course of the series. BUT, Caroline isn’t the lead, she’s a main character but TVD is undeniable about Elena, Stefan and Damon. What purpose does it have to make your lead uninteresting?

Please let me know if you’ve ever noticed this or if you have any other main character/love interests to add to this list. Thanks for reading!
